More bands for less

What’s happening?  We’ve had the Melbourne Cup, the shops are filling with Christmas decorations and there’s plans being made for the holidays.  Do the years just get shorter as you get older?

In protest, our latest Newsletter is not packed with festive messages or end of year specials, there’s time left for that; rather we continue to bring news of what we have been up to, what some of our clients and partners have been working on and the usual informative updates and industry news.

I’ve recently returned from a six week outback adventure through eastern Australia with my family; 12,000 kms from rainforest to desert to snow,  from coal to gold to opal mines, from cattle to sheep and wheat to vineyards and orchards and from -15m to 2015m AHD.  The common theme along the entire trip was the “Aussie Battler”. Whether it be corporate Australia battling with weakened exports and a high dollar, farmers battling with extreme conditions and cautious banks, the tourism industry battling with falling patronage and fuel prices  or small businesses battling with maintaining sales, red-tape and escalating costs; the Aussie spirit remains hopeful, strong and determined.

And so are we at Geoimage.

We have stuck firmly to our core business and passion; being “The Specialists in Satellite Imagery”, and strive every day to add more value and deliver efficiently for our clients.

As we gather speed to the end of another year let’s maintain our collective hope, strength and determination.  Hope you enjoy the read.

Cheers,

With the successful launch of WorldView-3 in August, DigitalGlobe has expanded it’s capture capacity – and is now offering even more options for higher resolution tasking.

Some exciting developments:
  • Reduction in price of 8-band data – 20-30% discount off the standard 8-band new capture and archive pricing – now available from both WorldView-2 and WorldView-3
  • Greater tasking capacity by multi-sensor tasking
  • WorldView-3 adds an additional 680,000 per sq km/day to DigitalGlobe’s capacity
  • Choice of higher resolution options – 30cm (available in early 2015), 40cm and 50cm
  • Short-wave Infrared bands from WorldView-3 will be available in early 2015

The additional spectral capabilities of WorldView-3 are expected to enhance opportunities across many industries – particularly agriculture, oil and gas and mining.

Innovative ways of using satellite imagery

Interactive Learning in Remote Sensing

Virtual Eye is a world leader in real-time 3D Sports Graphics on land, sea and in the air.

Virtual Eye, the Sports division of New Zealand based Animation Research Ltd (ARL), has completely revolutionised the sports of Sailing, Cricket & Motorsports to name but a few, from being difficult to watch and understand into a multi-device spectator sport.

Currently, Virtual Eye is contracted to provide the Formula1 series graphics for the BBC and the recent Sochi event proved no exception. The graphics included a detailed 3D depiction of the track and as the series progressed, graphics showing lines the drivers took; where they accelerated, braked, their speed and gear choices. As well, commentators were able to "drive" the virtual cars during analysis before or after race coverage, choosing the lines they would take into corners and how they might have dealt with crashes.

Dr Karen Joyce, a Senior Lecturer of Remote Sensing at Charles Darwin University and regular client of Geoimage has written and created an interactive remote sensing lesson on mass coral bleaching.

Karen graduated in 2005 with a PhD in Geographical Sciences from the University of Queensland. Her focus was on mapping live coral cover using remote sensing. Using her remote sensing expertise for a variety of applications, she has since worked as a Geomatic Engineering Officer in the Australian Army, developed models for spatially explicit mapping of recreation opportunities across New Zealand's conservation estate and developed techniques for integrating remote sensing into all phases of the disaster management cycle.

Her primary area of interest is in the application and automation of remote sensing tools for environmental monitoring and management problems. Some of her current projects include:

  • Creating Interactive Learning in Remote Sensing
  • Assessing Vegetation changes with in-situ time lapse photography
  • Marine Habitats of the Southern Great Barrier Reef
  • Change in Woody Vegetation at Kidman Springs
  • Developing an Unmanned Airborne System at CDU

All about Earthscan

So here’s my challenge… I’ve been given a brief to discuss Geological mapping and make it as appealing as it can be to our clients, but the problem is HOW?

With the exploration industry hardly moving, how do I get the information across to you so that you will kick yourself for not using it sooner?

So I sat there thinking:

  • Do I talk about our wealth of knowledge gained from over 26 years of experience?
  • Do I say how Geoimage has 3 geologists – Syl, Max & Bob that were all pioneers in the remote sensing industry?
  • Do I speak to you about the spectral enhancements we’ve developed to highlight mineralisation and alteration signatures?
  • Does one dare talk about all the costs saving measures both in time & money?
  • Do I tell you that with WorldView-3, we now have access to some very high resolution data complete with SWIR bands that will see regolith mapping down to a scale of 1:2000 or better?

Do you see the problem? It’s hard to decide which is important to the industry.

So with this in mind, I decided to ask one of our longest and most valuable clients, Earthscan to tell us more about this topic and how they use satellite imagery to achieve their desired outcomes.

Elaine & Peter Wilson from Earthscan

Firstly, a little bit about Earthscan, what they do and who they are.

Earthscan was established as a Remote Sensing and Geological consulting company in 1991. Earthscan is run by Peter & Elaine Wilson, both with over 30 years’ experience in the industry.

Peter, Managing Director & Chief Geologist, was involved with CSIRO during the 1980’s in the research and development of geological interpretation of satellite data. He has worldwide experience with major and minor companies exploring for gold, base metals, iron ore, uranium, diamonds and mineral sands.

Elaine is the Director for GIS Solutions and is proficient with a wide range of mining and GIS software including ERDAS Imagine, ERMapper and MapInfo.

K: So Peter & Elaine, tell me about the type of service that Earthscan offers?

E: Earthscan offers an enormous variety of data interpretation services for all types of geological and environmental applications. When using satellite imagery, we process and interpret for the following:

  • Regolith terrain mapping
  • Geological mapping in volcanic, sedimentary and metamorphic terrains
  • Structural geology
  • Geochemical studies of mineralisation potential
  • Regional and mine scale exploration targeting
  • Regional assessments and exploration strategies.

K: So explain to me and the readers how your services have contributed to the success of some projects?
E: Here are some of our projects:
  • Western Sahara – our services were used to identify iron ore, gold and rare earth mineralisation in very remote desert project areas
  • Algeria – Significantly increased area of known gold deposits & new resource mining
  • South Africa – identification of iron ore and manganese mineralisation – resulted in mining of manganese
  • Peru – Delineation of alteration with gold mineralisation in very mountainous terrain
  • West Pilbara, WA – identification of iron ore mineralisation leading to mining and resource drilling

K: How do you see your projects using satellite imagery in the future?

E: We are really looking forward to the features of WorldView-3 with the addition of all the extra bands including the short-wave infra- red bands. We believe this will offer our clients high resolution geological interpretations over project areas with the spectral information to help identify alteration associated with mineralisation.

To see more of what Earthscan do, visit their website: www.earthscan.com.au

So there you have it, the rest is up to you! Call us if you need help with your area or would like to discuss with someone that can understand you. Syl, Max & Bob are standing by, ready to help you with all your needs!
