Another addition to the Landsat Program by NASA and the USGS

 

Landsat 9 is set for launch on September 27th 2021 – U.S (2pm EDT) at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California on an Atlas V 401 launch vehicle. For Australia this will be 4am (AEST) on Tuesday 28th September 2021.

The latest addition to the Landsat Program, Landsat 9 will join the other Landsat Earth observation satellites currently in orbit. The Landsat Program by NASA and the USGS is the longest running space derived record of Earth to date.

Since 1972 this program has been a cornerstone in land imaging across the globe. There are currently 8 satellites (however Landsat 6 did not make orbit), where Landsat 9 will continue adding value to the program over the next decade with updated sensors onboard the satellite. Resolutions are moderate and will capture at 15m, 30m and 100m.

With nearly 50 years of historical data, the program has been capturing everything from natural to human derived changes over the years. The ability to go back this far in archive data makes the Landsat Program extremely valuable for evaluating changes across large areas of the globe through a vast timeframe.

  • Decades of climate change on Earth’s surface and biology.
  • Global forest dynamics and deforestation to evaluate carbon storage, resource availabilities and environmental protection efforts.
