Earth Observation Hub Showcase 3 Year Celebration

We are very excited to be a part of the upcoming showcase, an event that is shaping up to be a ‘doozy’. The Queensland Earth Observation Hub has been an excellent vehicle over the past few years for bringing academia and industry together to work on solutions that tackle real world challenges. Geoimage has been fortunate to be involved in two such projects with our friends at the Gold Coast City Council (GCCC), looking at biocondition of native habitat and invasive species mapping in the Gold Coast hinterland. The biocondition project is focused on the calibration and validation of SAR and Tri-Stereo optical satellite data for assessing vegetation condition. This work supports ecological restoration monitoring and the aim is to assess the use of satellite-based imagery as a more economical alternative to aerial LiDAR.

City of Gold Coast and their partner universities, University of the Sunshine Coast, The University of Queensland and Griffith University will have their own booth for showcasing the projects. As for Geoimage, we have been hard at work developing our change detection algorithms with our good friends at University of Southern Queensland. While Machine Learning (ML) is great for counting swimming pools, tennis courts or face recognition, those models require a huge amount of training data, something that is rarely available for mapping changes in the Australian landscape. We have been working on reducing the reliance of ML models on training data and will be discussing our results.
