As an early adopter of Pixxel, Geoimage is proud to announce the latest successful launch on August 26, 2025, of three additional Firefly satellites into orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. This launch significantly expands Pixxel’s growing satellite network, moving it closer to delivering continuous, real-time monitoring of the planet’s health. These new satellites join the three Fireflies launched in January 2025, bringing the total number of operational spacecrafts in Pixxel’s constellation to six, unlocking the ability to capture daily hyperspectral imaging from space for the first time.
Geoimage is eagerly awaiting the first captures of imagery from the Fireflies over an area of south-east Queensland. The imagery will be used to identify invasive weed species and is part of a research project led by the Gold Coast City Council and involving three universities. The outcomes will allow land managers to target invasive species and more effectively implement weed management strategies.
Operating as a synchronised constellation, the Fireflies form the world’s most advanced commercial hyperspectral imaging system in orbit. Each satellite captures data across more than 135+ spectral bands, far surpassing traditional multispectral satellites, at a high 5-metre spatial resolution and across a 40-kilometre wide-swath. This combination of spectral richness and spatial detail enables the detection of subtle and complex changes on Earth’s surface that conventional satellite imagery cannot reveal.
This enhanced capability provides unprecedented tools for scientists, businesses, and governments to analyse mining operations, natural resources, agriculture, the environment, and industry with remarkable precision. It supports mineral exploration by accurately mapping surface mineral composition, helping to reduce time and costs while minimising environmental impact. Additionally, it enables early detection of vegetation stress weeks before visible signs appear, giving farmers critical time to optimise crop yields. The system can also identify sources of water contamination that might otherwise go unnoticed until significant damage occurs. During natural disasters, the Fireflies deliver rapid and detailed assessments of areas affected by wildfires, floods, or oil spills, facilitating faster and more effective response efforts.
With these advancements, Geoimage is now able to deliver richer geospatial insights than ever before. The expanded Firefly constellation enables the provision of advanced analytics and imaging services across multiple sectors, helping clients monitor crop health, assess environmental impact, ensure regulatory compliance, and conduct detailed mineral analysis. The higher spectral resolution and finer spatial detail empower organisations to transition from reactive problem-solving to proactive management, anticipating issues before they become visible and enabling precise, data-driven decisions.
Pixxel’s ambitious long-term goal is to build a constellation of more than 30 hyperspectral satellites, providing full global coverage every 24 hours. With six satellites currently operational and daily imaging capabilities unlocked, this vision is rapidly becoming a reality. This expansion also lays the foundation for Pixxel’s next mission: the Honeybees. Featuring extended Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) bands, the Honeybee satellites will work alongside the Fireflies to create a persistent, planet-wide health monitoring system designed for even broader spectral coverage and faster revisit times.
Together, these constellations will power predictive climate analytics, sharper resource management, and real-time environmental intelligence.
